Lac des Mille Lacs gets $500K for solar power project
The federal and provincial governments have just announced joint funding for 13 infrastructure projects across Ontario, including one for Lac des Mille Lacs.
The First Nation will receive more than $500,000 for a new solar-powered electric micro-grid to reduce the community's reliance on diesel.
The community currently uses the fuel to power a roundhouse and cultural complex.
Band Councillor Tracy Morrison said those generators are noisy.
"We like to see it as a nice serene, and peaceful piece of property on the lake and we're just really hoping that this project is gonna really bring together our vision of that peaceful serene atmosphere out there," she said.
Morrison said she hopes the project will help to re-establish the community on its lands after years of forced abandonment due to flooding.
