Extended winter weather means some neighbourhood streets could be grittier than usual this summer.

City crews started post-winter cleanup to sweep up dirt and debris six weeks later this year than in 2012.

Brad Adams, manager of the city's roads division, said residential roads are usually cleaned up by the beginning of July. But a longer blast of cold weather delayed those operations this year.

"Because weather and winter hung around for such a long time, we just didn't have the opportunity with the temperatures out there to get out there and sweep," Adams said.

He said it's likely the streets won't be swept clean until the end of July.
