Thunder Bay Police have released the name of the man killed last Saturday.

He was 25-year-old Denis Desmond Mathews.

Police received a 911 call just after 7 p.m. on Dec. 29, stating that the owner of a house at 245 Villa St. had come home to find two people unconscious inside.

When officers arrived, they found two men who had been seriously assaulted.

Police said Mathews had no vital signs and was later pronounced dead at Thunder Bay Health Sciences Centre.

The other man — a 23-year-old — had life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Police said both men were known to the homeowner and that alcohol was a factor.

A post-mortem examination has been completed on the deceased man.

Police said they are withholding the results of that examination because they are an important part of the investigation into what happened.
