Northwestern Ontario will be getting a new Superior Court judge, CBC News has learned.

Ontario Chief Justice Heather Smith said in a letter to the Thunder Bay Law Association that a judge elsewhere in Canada is retiring and the replacement will be based in Thunder Bay.

“Hopefully we'll reduce backlogs and actually help the judiciary who were spread very thin, and hopefully allow us to better serve both Fort Frances and Kenora, as well as the Thunder Bay area,” said Gordon Fillmore, president of the law association and Assistant Crown Attorney.

Although there is no set time line, Fillmore hopes that the new judge will start work before the end of the year.

"We've been understaffed as it were, in terms of judges. It gets us up to a full compliment. We need the judicial sources,” he said. ‘The Thunder Bay Law Association has been advocating for a significant period of time."
