A pair of teenagers who became lost while hiking at the Cascade Conservation Area on Sunday afternoon are fortunate to have been found, Thunder Bay Police report.

Police said officers went out on snow machines as they searched for the 17-year-old teens and their dog, who had started their trek along the trail system at about 1 p.m.

When the pair became lost, they called home on a cell phone to ask for help.

The police were contacted at about 4:15 p.m. and located the lost hikers on the snowmobile trails in the Shuniah Mine area at 5:20 p.m

The teens were reunited with family members in the parking lot at the Cascades. Both the hikers and the dog were very cold and possibly suffering from frostbite.

“Given our recent cold temperature, this situation could have had a less favorable outcome,” police stated in a press release Monday.

Police are urging people who are heading out for hikes to be adequately dressed for the weather and to stay on a trail system with which they are familiar.
