Algoma Street has been reopened to traffic between Camelot and River Streets in Thunder Bay after being closed because of a sewer line break that created a cubic metre-sized cavern.

The supervisor of Sewer and Water North for the city said his crew originally estimated that the closure would last for two days, but things went much faster than they'd expected.

"The excavation went well and there was very little frost on the road," Gerald Luty said.

Luty said the majority of work has been completed, but crews will still need to finish things up next week.
