The Ontario Provincial Police say five people died when an SUV crashed into a river in northwestern Ontario on Saturday.
Four of the victims are from Slate Falls First Nation, about 150 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout, Ontario. The fifth is from Sioux Lookout.
The OPP say the group was headed to Slate Falls from Sioux Lookout when their vehicle left Slate Falls Road and landed in the Brokenmouth River. The accident occurred about 15 kilometres south of Slate Falls.
Police were notified of the accident about 7 p.m. on Saturday.
On Sunday morning, they recovered the vehicle from the river and located the five deceased inside.
The victims have been identified as Kimberly Whiskeyjack, 23, of Sioux Lookout and John Bighead, 23, Samantha Loon, 26, Claudia Loon, 20, and Gordon Carpenter, 55, all from Slate Falls First Nation.
Post mortems are scheduled to take place in Kenora.
The police investigation is continuing.
