$1 M prize 'cherry on cake' for Thunder Bay couple
Right on the heels of a $50 million LOTTO MAX win, Thunder Bay is home to another winning ticket
Karen and Antonio Biscardi have won more than enough money to finish the renovations they have been doing on their Thunder Bay home. As of Friday afternoon, they were officially millionaires.
Karen said she and her husband wasted no time heading for Toronto after learning they had won a Lotto 649 jackpot.
"We were having breakfast coffee and I brought my ticket out to my husband from our bedroom and gave it to him and said, can you check this please? I really want to get our house finished if we're winners," Karen said.
Antonio then looked on the Internet and found they had a winning ticket.
"It took us awhile to realize it," Antonio said. "[We were] looking at the numbers on the computer screen and then looking at our numbers, kind of in disbelief."
Both he and his wife have had health issues recently.
Karen, who is 50, finished chemotherapy treatment for ovarian cancer three weeks ago and said she now has a clean bill of health. She runs a hair salon.
Antonio, 52, is a former construction superintendent who hasn’t been able to work since breaking his back in a car accident a few years ago.
"It's been quite the past three-and-a-half years," he said. "It's kind of the cherry on top of the cake, winning this."
The couple has two adult children. They plan to pay off their house, finish renovations, pay bills, take a holiday, and put money aside for retirement.
