Delayed surgeries at Health Sciences North in Sudbury are affecting patients throughout the region.

Last week, the hospital announced it will delay non-urgent surgeries due to lack of beds.

The medical director of the hospital's surgical program said alternate level of care patients — mostly seniors who can't access the care they need elsewhere in the community — continue to take up more and more beds in the hospital.

Englehart resident Sylvie Rondeau was due to have surgery in Sudbury earlier this month to correct lower back problems that prevent her from sitting or walking properly.

Rondeau said she received word that her surgery was cancelled the day before it was scheduled.

"I cried a lot," she said. "I knew I was going back home to deal with the pain that I can't seem to manage. I can't manage this pain."

Rondeau said she's been told her surgery should be rescheduled within the next six weeks, but added she's nervous that, even with a new date, she'll get bumped again.
