College Boreal in Sudbury is getting ready to launch two new architecture programs in 2014.

The announcement comes after the long-awaited opening of Laurentian University's School of Architecture in the city's downtown.

College Boreal officials say its program will be less academic and will have more an emphasis on construction, as well as specialized skills like budgeting.

Boreal’s vice-president of academics said he believes the two schools will work well together.

"Obviously, one of our mandates is creating a hub in northern Ontario where architecture is on the roadmap," Daniel Giroux said.

"It’s not just mining. It’s not just health sciences. There’s a new niche."

College Boreal's programs will be the only ones in northern Ontario offered exclusively in French, he noted

Laurentian University's architecture program offers some French instruction, however.
