What began in cyberspace in Sudbury ended in real-world sexual assaults on local young people.

That's according to Sudbury police, who say that, on Wednesday, a man was arrested in connection with an internet child pornography investigation that began two years ago.

Sudbury police said the 62-year-old is now in custody, facing 17 charges related to child pornography, sexual assault and sexual interference.

Sudbury's cybercrime unit started its investigation in 2011 into an internet user who was looking at and sharing child pornography, police said.

By September of 2013, the source of the activity was found and his computers were seized and searched. Officers found evidence of child pornography.

About a month later, police said they received complaints from three young people who accused the same man of sexual assault.

The accused man was arrested by police yesterday and is in custody pending a bail hearing.
