Nepewassi boat crash sends passengers flying
A 23-foot boat struck a parked 14-foot boat and became airborne, police say

Charges are pending after a two-boat crash on Nepewassi Lake sent one of the vessels into the air, ejecting two of its passengers — one of them an 11-year-old boy.
On Wednesday, just before 7 p.m., officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to the collision, which took place on the lake in Burwash Township, south of Sudbury. They discovered that a northbound 23-foot Chaparral-brand speed boat struck the centre-side of an east-facing 14-foot aluminum boat, which was stationary. The collision caused the speed boat to become airborne over the aluminum boat.
The man in the aluminum boat — and an 11-year-old boy — were ejected from the vessel. The pair was rescued and the boy was airlifted to Health Sciences North in Sudbury with non-life-threatening injuries. The man was transported by ambulance to the same hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Another 11-year-old boy in the vessel was not injured.
All three occupants in the aluminum boat are from the State of New York.
The male driver and lone occupant of the speed boat — who hails from Toronto — was not injured.
Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, the OPP reported. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
