Habitat for Humanity's ReStore in Sudbury is asking the community to donate used, but operational stoves.

Jeff Chartrand-Quinn, the sales co-ordinator of ReStore, which sells second hand appliances and furniture, said there are currently several single mothers on its waiting list.

But they're not the only ones who come looking for a second-hand stove.

'We have anywhere from five to a dozen people looking for stoves that we don't have.'—Jeff Chartrand-Quinn, sales co-ordinator at Sudbury's ReStore

“There’s always a demand for stoves … typically we sell a used stove for $120,” he said.

“We could probably sell two or three times as many stoves in that price range. Every week we have … anywhere from five to a dozen people looking for stoves that we don’t have.”

Getting a reasonably priced stove would good news for Kandace Donnelly, who is on Ontario Works. She gets a $300 credit to spend on a stove.

Donnelly is next on the list to get a $120 stove from Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. Keeping prices low is crucial for her.

“I've got a little baby here, so I've got to get anything that's affordable,” she said. “I'm hoping I can get one soon because I'd like to be able to cook tomorrow.”

Donnelly isn't the only one on the waiting list. The ReStore has to turn away people every week because there aren’t enough stoves to supply demand. Chartrand-Quinn recommends those in need keep checking back for the donations that he hopes will start coming in.

Demand has been so high that Chartrand-Quinn posted a message asking for old appliances on ReStore’s Facebook page.

He said the organization will pick-up donated stoves from the Sudbury area.
