Pay back tipping fees, taxpayer group tells union
Greater Sudbury Taxpayers Association said union might want to consider repaying taxpayers

A taxpayers association is calling on a Sudbury union to pay back $100,000 in waived tipping fees. The city waived the fees in 2008 in the aftermath of the fire that destroyed the old United Steelworks Local 6500 union hall.
Dan Melanson, president of the Greater Sudbury Taxpayers Association, said “it would appear that the Steelworkers have now gotten back on their feet and it may be that they would like to repay the taxpayers for having contributed to their project back then."
But the president of USW Local 6500, Rick Bertrand, said the union is not interested in re-opening a debate that is several years old.
"It was a democratic decision at that time and we're going to continue to build on our legacy,” he said “[That legacy is] contributing to our economic and social development of this great community."
Melanson said the taxpayers association has not contacted the city about their request.
