Bait dealers may pay the price for the new provincial ban on emerald shiners.
The Ontario government will no longer allow dealers to import the small fish from the Lake Simcoe area because of concern about the spread of a virus which has been detected among several fish in Simcoe.
The infectious disease can be deadly to fish, although the province said it won't harm humans.
For Brian Scheuer, owner of Sudbury’s Pro Bait and Tackle, the emerald shiner was a big part of his business.
However he agrees with the province's decision.
“Some of the people that go ice fishing fish in Ramsey Lake,” he said. “And then spread it to the fish throughout the area … our fisheries are precarious enough as it is.”
The ban on the emerald shiners came into effect Jan. 1.
