Rising water levels keeps Wawa residents on alert
Flood warning issued for the Michipicoten River watershed on Tuesday
People in Wawa are keeping a close eye on the skies today now that a flood warning is in effect for the Michipicoten River watershed.
The Ministry of Natural Resources in the Wawa District issued a flood warning Tuesday afternoon for the watershed, near White River and Wawa.
Any more rain could make the rising flood problem worse, said Derek Chapman, a retiree in Wawa who was checking out some flood prone spots in town Tuesday.
"I think the marina was three feet underwater," he said. "The water came three feet up in the building."
Officials in Wawa say some culverts on forest access roads near Wawa are at or near their flow capacity.
The public is advised to be cautious when travelling in the bush, where mudslides have been observed.
Flood watches remain in effect for Lake Nipissing and the French and Sturgeon River areas.
