Ontario's health minister says she will introduce legislation next month to ban smoking on restaurant and bar patios across the province.

Earlier this week, Sudbury city council voted to move ahead with a city bylaw, if the province doesn't pass its own legislation.

On Thursday's CBC Sudbury's Morning North radio show, Deb Matthews had this to say:

Health Minister Deb Matthews told CBC Sudbury Morning North radio host Markus Schwabe that having a province wide policy "is best." (Pawel Dwulit/Canadian Press)

"We do think that having a province wide policy on this is best because will people will know and restaurant owners will know what the law is across the province."

Sudbury city council also voted to ban smoking on almost all municipal property.

The details of the municipal property smoking ban are expected in the fall.
