Ontario Provincial Police in Sudbury are now reporting that 13-year-old Alexander Guy Lemay was the victim of a fatal Highway 17 accident on Friday.

Lemay, who hails from North Bay, was struck and killed as a result of walking into the east bound lane of Highway 17. Police said he was struck by an east-bound pickup truck whose driver was not able to avoid the collision with the victim.

No charges will be laid in this incident, police added.

OPP Constable Lucie Sirois said the boy, who was autistic, got out of a vehicle and walked into the eastbound lane.

"The driver did everything he possibly could to avoid the collision with the victim, and he was unable to do so because of oncoming vehicles," she said.

A service for Lemay will be held in North Bay on Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m. Friday.

The teen was taken to Health Sciences North and later died of his injuries.

The highway was closed east of Coniston for a few hours Friday afternoon as police investigated.

Detours were in place while the highway — between Highway 537 and RR#90, was closed.
