The demolition of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake began Thursday afternoon.

That's a blessing to many in the community, who regard the remnants of the mall as a painful reminder of the deadly collapse.

A portion of the rooftop parking garage collapsed in June, killing two women and injuring dozens of other people.

The company assigned to take down the mall said it will take more than two months to dismantle the shopping centre.

The public inquiry into the cause of the collapse is expected to start at the end of February.
