There are 500 more people in Greater Sudbury getting employment insurance benefits than there were about this time last year.

The most recent report on EI benefits released by Stats Canada shows that 2,800 Sudburians received payments in May.

That goes against a national trend, as the number of Canadians on employment insurance is generally on the decline.

That figure has also dropped in the only other northern Ontario city included in the study — about 1,500 people in Thunder Bay are receiving EI, about 100 fewer than last spring.
