Coroner mulls over inquest for fatal Lake Wanapitae boat crash

The investigation into a Sudbury area boat crash that killed three people last year is still underway — and the coroner is taking a keen interest in the emergency response to the incident.
A year ago today, the community of Skead in Greater Sudbury was hit hard with the news that Matt Humeniuk and Mike Kritz were killed when the boat crashed on Lake Wanapitae and burst into flames. Stephanie Bertrand was also on that boat, and died just over a week later from her injuries.

The investigation into a Sudbury area boat crash that killed three people last year is still underway — and the coroner is taking a keen interest in the emergency response to the incident.

Matt Humeniuk and Mike Kritz died in the Lake Wanapitae crash, and passenger Stephanie Bertrand succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

Coroner Dr. David Eden said he can't get into detail about what those emergency response issues are, but “one of the considerations has been whether there should be recommendations arising from this case, [and] whether those recommendations should be the subject of an inquest."

Eden said he first needs to speak with the families involved and get their feedback on moving forward. The decision on whether to hold an inquest or not is up to the coroner, but he noted the families' opinions will play a pivotal role.

The public will be notified if an inquest is called, he added.
