A vacant home in Capreol that was set to be demolished was razed by fire yesterday — and now Sudbury police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office are investigating.

Fire crews were called to the dwelling on Ballpark Road about 11 p.m.

Fire platoon Chief George Lalonde said the cause of the blaze is still being determined, but noted the fire is considered suspicious in nature.

“There was no power leading to the home [and] there was nobody in the home,” he said.

“The house was vacant and so there’s really no potential source of ignition, unless there was a lightning strike or anything like that.”

Lalonde said part of the investigation will include speaking with Environment Canada to see whether or not lightning struck in that area.

In total, 22 firefighters from four stations were called in to assist in battling the blaze.
