Friends, family and community members will gather in Elliot Lake today to honour Lucie Aylwin, one of two people killed in the partial collapse of a shopping mall in the northern Ontario community two weeks ago.

Aylwin, 37, was working at a lottery kiosk at the Algo Centre Mall when the roof caved in on June 23.

"It's going to be hard to move on," said Aylwin's fiancé, Gary Gendron. "She's going to be in my heart for the rest of my life. I was supposed to be with her for the rest of my life."

Gendron said people have been invited to celebrate Lucie's life.

"We always talked about stuff like that. We always wanted something short and sweet to remember each other," he said.

Doloris Perizzolo, 74, who also died in the tragedy, was buried at Woodlands Cemetery on July 4.

$30M class-action lawsuit launched

A $30-million class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Aylwin and Perizzolo, as well as others injured in the disaster.

Lawyer Douglas Elliott confirmed at a news conference Friday that the class action was filed in the Superior Court of Justice against several defendants, including the Eastwood Mall Corp., owner of the mall. The head of the corporation, Robert Nazarian, as well as the Ontario government and the City of Elliot Lake have also been named in the suit. The class action must be certified to proceed.

Meanwhile, the mall's merchants are waiting for the results of both the criminal probe and the Ministry of Labour's investigation.

"It's difficult to put a timeframe to what is going to happen," said Elliot Lake MPP Michael Mantha.

Some residents have said they want what remains of the mall to be torn down and rebuilt, and a memorial erected to honour Aylwin and Perizzolo.
