Police in Quebec have called off the search for a plane that was feared to have gone down in a lake west of Montreal.

A search was launched after police received a 911 call from a fisherman near Lac des Deux Montagnes, who reported seeing a low-flying airplane. Other witnesses also said they saw an aircraft in distress.

Police checked with the closest military base, CFB Trenton in Ontario. Trenton's radar readings showed a plane did fly close to the surface of the lake, but it did not crash.

Officials say firefighters from Montreal, Vaudreuil-Dorion and Pointe-au-Calumet, Que., took part in the search along with a helicopter from CFB Trenton.

Private and public airfields said there were no reports of missing planes.
