Tommy Taylor used to describe himself as apolitical. That changed, however, after June 26, 2010.

The Toronto actor and playwright was wandering near the Novotel hotel on the Esplanade with his girlfriend when the couple was swept up in the mass arrests that were made as the G20 summit took place a few blocks away.

He was detained for nearly 24 hours before being released without charge.

“I’ve never felt this angry, violated or betrayed,” he wrote in a Facebook note that went viral. “My country broke my heart.”

One year later, Taylor has turned his note into a play called You should have stayed home.

He performed Act Three, "Tommy Taylor, you’re under arrest," for our camera. The full play will be staged during the SummerWorks Theatre Festival in Toronto in August.
