Former colonel and convicted murderer Russell Williams has been officially expelled from the Canadian Forces, the Department of National Defence said Friday.

In finalizing his release, officials retrieved his South-West Asia Service Medal with Afghanistan bar and Canadian Forces Decoration with clasp and Commission Scroll.

"We're just satisfied that all the administrative steps were taken and we really wanted the Canadian public to know this so that there's a marker and we can move forward from this point on," said Cmdr. Hubert Genest, spokesman for the Canadian Forces.

Williams's commission was revoked on Oct. 22, one day after the former commander of CFB Trenton was sentenced to two life terms for the first-degree murders in Ontario of Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 38, of Brighton and Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville.

The 47-year-old pleaded guilty on Oct. 18 to more than 80 crimes, including the murders, two counts each of sexual assault and forcible confinement, and 82 break-ins and attempted break-ins. He's imprisoned at Kingston Penitentiary.

A spokesman for the military said in late November that the medals would be cut into pieces using a special device to ensure they would not be issued again. The scroll would likely be shredded.

The military retrieved Williams's military uniforms, equipment and publications on Nov. 17. The uniforms were burned one day later at CFB Trenton.
