Visit takes place at castle in the Scottish Highlands

David Johnston, Canada's governor general-designate, paid a visit to Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Sunday for his first official audience with Queen Elizabeth.

Johnston, 69, will succeed Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean when her term ends Oct. 1 to become the 28th governor general.

In a statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Johnston's visit to the Queen's summer residence "marks another step on the path to his installation as the Queen's representative in Canada."

During the meeting, Johnston was invested as Commander of the Order of Military Merit and Commander of the Order of Merit for Police Forces.

Johnston has been Companion of the Order of Canada since 1997 and will hold the title of Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order upon installation.

During the visit to Balmoral, his wife Sharon Johnston was invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada.
