Police tape surrounds a house near Mountain View, Ont., where two women were fatally shot Friday. (Dave Seglins/CBC) An 18-year-old made his first court appearance Saturday morning, a day after he was arrested in the shooting deaths of a woman and her teenage daughter at their home south of Belleville, Ont.
Dean Brown of Belleville was remanded in custody after briefly appearing in the Kingston courthouse via video link from the Quinte West Ontario Provincial Police detachment, where he is being held.
He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one of attempted murder. The judge asked Brown if he had a lawyer, and Brown said yes. The judge urged Brown to get in touch with his lawyer to prepare for another court appearance Monday.
The victims found dead at the home near the small rural community of Mountain View have been identified as Tracy Hannah, 46, and her daughter Whitney Hannah, 14.
A third victim, who neighbours have said is Tracy Hannah's 18-year-old daughter, Shannon, was airlifted to Kingston General Hospital with serious injuries.
"They were an amazing family," said Ashley Shattraw, a local teenager who has known both Brown and Shannon Hannah since public school.
"Her mom loved her kids, would do anything for them. Whitney was a funny little kid, she was so carefree and outgoing," Shattraw said.

Shattraw said Brown and Shannon Hannah dated for about five years, but ended the relationship about a month ago. She said Hannah was studying to be a nurse at a local college and had started spending time with new friends.
Andrew Bury, a friend of Brown's, told CBC News that he thinks it was Brown who ended the relationship with Hannah.
"But as far as I knew, they were still on good terms. They weren't fighting or they weren't exchanging any words or anything," Bury said.
Bury described Brown as a "mellow, cool, calm guy" and said he was a good friend.
Prince Edward County OPP responded to a 911 call about a shooting at a house on Valley Road at about 6 a.m. ET Friday. After a chase, police arrested a suspect in nearby Trenton, about three hours after the killings.
