Former MP's body found in Haiti

The body of former Liberal MP Serge Marcil has been found in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Marcil, 65, had been staying at the Hotel Montana, which was destroyed in the earthquake that struck the impoverished Caribbean country 11 days ago.

His death was confirmed Saturday by his wife, Christiane Pelchat.

Marcil was a federal Liberal MP until 2004, and was briefly a Quebec cabinet minister before that.

He was on a business trip for the engineering firm Group SM International when the quake hit.

Just moments before the quake hit, he was riding in an elevator at the now-collapsed five-storey hotel, where he was staying with a colleague.

The company said Marcil's colleague got off on the fourth floor and was rescued the next day, while Marcil was headed up to the fifth floor.

Foreign Affairs has confirmed the deaths of 18 Canadians and says that number is expected to rise.

More than 230 Canadians are still reported missing in the quake zone.
