Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon addresses the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly at United Nations headquarters on Saturday. (Jason DeCrow/Associated Press) Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon slammed Iran over its nuclear program in a Saturday evening speech at the United Nations.
Speaking at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly, Cannon echoed an earlier call from the U.S. administration that Iran must provide inspectors with open access to a newly revealed nuclear facility.
"We are all acutely conscious that a global challenge that touches us all is the threat of nuclear proliferation," he said.
"Canada was deeply troubled with the recent revelation that Iran has been building a covert uranium enrichment facility for several years," Cannon said.
He also said he hopes talks between the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany and Iran at the beginning of October will address the "continued dishonesty" surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
Earlier this week, Cannon led Canada's delegation in a walkout of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's address to the UN. The walkout was in protest over Ahmadinejad's past denials of the Holocaust and verbal attacks on Israel.
