Ont. boy struck by lightning dies in hospital

Three people were taken to hopsital after lightning struck a soccer field in Brampton, Ont., on Aug. 12. One of them, a five-year-old boy, died Friday. (Sean Magennis/CBC)A five-year-old boy struck by lightning on Aug. 12 in Brampton, Ont., has died at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.
Hospital spokeswoman Judy Noordermeer confirmed that Kyus Caines passed away shortly after 8 p.m. Friday.
Kyus, his mother Dulce, 26, and Kyus's three-year-old friend were on a soccer field at about 2 p.m. in Centennial Park in Brampton when they were hit by what one witness described as a "fireball."
Shortly after the lightning strike, Oral Caines, Kyus's father, said the three victims had seen storm clouds coming and decided to go home. As they were walking through the field, he said, lightning struck.
Caines said his son was the one directly hit by lightning, and the other two were beside him. They also required hospital treatment.
According to a report, Kyus was carrying a metal scooter over his shoulder when he was hit.
