Via Rail has begun to cancel service on long-distance passenger routes in the event its engineers walk off the job at the end of the week.

On Tuesday, the union representing about 340 locomotive engineers gave notice of their intention to strike at noon Friday if a deal isn't reached, Via said in a statement posted on its website.

Representatives of Via and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union are currently in negotiations.

All trains scheduled to depart after noon ET Friday will be cancelled until a settlement is reached, and no alternate transportation will be provided, the rail corporation said.

"Via remains hopeful that an agreement will be reached before the set deadline," the statement said.

The company said it will ensure that passengers departing prior to the Friday deadline are transported to their destination, either by train or by alternate means.

Trains on the Sudbury-White River route in Ontario and Victoria-Courtenay route in B.C. will remain in service, as they are operated by third parties on behalf of Via.

Customers seeking more information can consult Via's website or contact Via at 888-VIA-RAIL, or 800 268-9503 for the hearing-impaired.
