Police have arrested 125 people — including 46 they say are gang members — in a large-scale raid across the Greater Toronto Area.

Heavily-armed police officers began arriving at about 100 residences across the region starting at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Toronto police Chief Bill Blair told reporters Wednesday afternoon that charges ranging from trafficking in firearms to attempted murder will be laid.

He said the alleged gang members belong to two groups — the "MNE" (Markham Road/Eglinton Avenue East) and the "400 Crew" (400/McCowan Road) — that operated out of the southeast area of Toronto.

"But their criminal influence extends well beyond that neighbourhood," he said.

Staff Insp. Greg Getty said police have confiscated firearms, including two loaded AK-47s, a sawed-off shotgun and 34 handguns. Police also seized large quantities of cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy, as well as more than $430,000 in cash.

"This is an operation of unprecedented scale," said Blair who, along with Getty, stressed that the arrests were carried out without any injuries.

"They are dangerous people in the locations we entered today," Getty said.

More than 1,000 police officers were involved, from the York, Durham and Peel regional forces along with officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Ontario Provincial Police.

The operation was co-ordinated by the Toronto Police Services' guns and gangs task force.

While the raids were multi-jurisdictional and warrants were issued across the Greater Toronto Area, much of the activity appeared to take place in Scarborough, particularly at a four-apartment complex at Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue.
