News of an upcoming royal visit in 2009 or 2010 emerged after Elizabeth II hosted a lunch in London Wednesday for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and their wives.
The two Commonwealth leaders are in England to attend the Group of 20 economic summit.
No details of the monarch's prospective visit to Canada were released.
The Queen last visited Canada in 2005, as part of the celebrations surrounding the provincial centennials of Saskatchewan and Alberta.
She turns 83 on April 21, and celebrates the 56th anniversary of her coronation on June 2.
One detail of the visit is known, thanks to an earlier news release from Harper's office.
It will be overseen on Canada's end by Kevin MacLeod, whom the prime minister named Wednesday as the new Canadian Secretary to The Queen. In that position, MacLeod will be the chief contact in Canada for logistical and protocol issues connected with any royal visits.
MacLeod, originally from Cape Breton, is a long-time employee of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and held the post on an interim basis during the 2005 royal visit. He now serves as Usher of the Black Rod in the Senate and will continue to hold that post as well as his new one.
The prime minister's news release also said MacLeod will chair the Diamond Jubilee Committee, which will mark Elizabeth's 60th anniversary as Queen of Canada in 2012.
