A senior Conservative says Prime Minister Stephen Harper could call a federal election as early as Sept. 2.

The well-placed party official said Friday that no decision has been made but an election call is highly likely sometime within the next two-to-four weeks.

According to the official, Harper could pull the plug on his minority government immediately after the Labour Day weekend, or wait until shortly after Parliament resumes on Sept. 15.

The prime minister will not make a final decision until after he meets with opposition leaders to determine whether there's any chance his government will be able to forge ahead with its agenda during the fall.

The meetings have not yet been scheduled, but the official said Harper would ideally like to get together with each of the three opposition leaders sometime next week.

At a constituency event in Jonquière, Que., Labour Minister Jean Pierre Blackburn told the crowd that he's cleared his schedule for the next two weeks in order to prepare for an election call.

Blackburn also said he's been summoned to Ottawa for a special meeting with the prime minister and a few key members of his cabinet.
