A 31-year-old Belgian man has been charged after he allegedly lured a 13-year-old girl to a Montreal hotel on Friday night.
Police said they found the girl with a man at a hotel on a gritty strip near Montreal's central bus terminal after a city-wide manhunt.
The accused, who is expected to appear in court Monday, is charged with child luring and could face further charges, said Montreal police Const. Yannick Ouimet in a phone interview.
Ouimet described the suspect as unknown to Montreal police but said they are working with Belgian authorities and Interpol.
Girl appeared unharmed
Police said the girl appeared unharmed but was taken to hospital for tests.
The girl's parents reported her missing when she didn't return home after school.
"This was not a little girl that had disappeared before," said Ouimet. "It was really unusual for her to do that and that's why her mom was worried and decided to call police right away."
Police said officers found evidence on the girl's computer that she had been chatting online with a man for months.
"There were several conversations that took place between the two of them," said Ouimet, noting the officers found thousands of pages of online chats.
Police checked hotels
Police were also able to find a photograph of a suspect from an online profile, he said.
With photos in hand, officers visited hotels across the city looking for the pair.
Police said they found a man and the girl at 3:30 a.m. after a worker at a hotel recognized them.
The suspect is believed to have arrived in Montreal last week.
