Five Mohawk protesters arrested during clashes with provincial police in eastern Ontario appeared in court Saturday and were ordered to remain in custody.
Three of them are accused of assaulting two officers in Deseronto, west of Kingston, on Friday after police arrested Shawn Brant. Brant helped organize blockades last April and June of a Montreal-to-Toronto CN Rail corridor.
A police cruiser's window was smashed during the incident on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
Those who appeared in court face various charges, including assaulting police, assault with a weapon and mischief. They were remanded into custody and are to appear again Monday in the same Napanee, Ont., court.
Those charged with assaulting police include Dan Doreen, 34, who led a group that erected a blockade a week ago on Deseronto's main road as part of a longstanding aboriginal land dispute.
A 21-year-old man in the group is accused of assault with a weapon, which police say was a set of brass knuckles.
Brant, 44, faces charges of assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, breach of recognizance and possession of marijuana.
