A man whose young daughter was found dead in the family home in Delta, B.C., has been charged with first-degree murder.
Police arrested 47-year-old Lakhvinder Kahlon after his daughter Rajvinder was found dead Friday morning.
A family friend told reporters on Friday the child was 18 months old but on Saturday, Delta police issued a statement that said she was 2 1/2 years old.
Const. Paul Eisenzimmer of the Delta police department told a news conference Saturday that the child's death is a terrible tragedy and that the community and family are devastated.
Lakhvinder Kahlon and his wife have two older daughters.Eisenzimmer said Kahlon's wife was not home when the little girl died.
"The family is currently with friends and extended family and are being assisted by the Delta police department's victim services unit," he said.
Eisenzimmer said several calls were made to police on the morning of the toddler's death and that there was a disturbance on the street, prompting neighbours to phone 911.
He wouldn't elaborate on the disturbance.
On Saturday, a bouquet of pink tulips was placed at the front door of the residence, along with a card that read: "With our deepest sympathy, from a caring family in the neighbourhood."
Neighbours in the residential area close to an elementary school were trying to come to terms with what happened on their quiet street.
"It's weird and sad and it's an unhappy situation, especially in North Delta," said Kayla Robbie of the community, which is about 35 kilometres south of downtown Vancouver.
Miguel Villcorta, who moved next door to the family this month, said he's never seen Kahlon or any members of his family.
Villcorta said he can't imagine what a child that young could ever do to deserve such a tragic outcome.
Eisenzimmer said the investigation has also been difficult for police officers.
"Any crime involving children is tough on any investigator," he said. "Most of us are family people and we have our own children.
"Dealing with a child death is tough at the best of times and one of this nature is harder yet."
He said no weapons were recovered in the home.
Eisenzimmer said Kahlon is reportedly suffering from depression and will be monitored closely while in custody.
Kahlon will make his first court appearance in provincial court in Surrey on Monday.
