GG praises troops for their 'courage, conviction'

Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean marked her annual New Year's Day message with a tribute to Canadian troops fighting in Afghanistan.
"As Canadians, we are inspired by the courage, determination and conviction shown by our soldiers overseas," she said. "Women and men facing many dangers, often at great personal risk."

She said Canadians thoughts are with those who have been wounded — some disabled for life — and for the soldiers who have fallen in battle.
Thirty Canadians died in Afghanistan in 2007, including 27-year-old Gunner Jonathan Dion, killed on Sunday when the light armoured vehicle he was in was hit by an improvised explosive device.
In all, 74 Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.
The Governor General also praised people who work to make the lives of their fellow Canadians better.
"We must honour the women and men from all across this land who use their knowledge, creativity, vision and passion in the service of their fellow Canadians in every field imaginable.
Jean also spoke of Quebec City's 400th anniversary this year, urging Canadians to "take great pride in recognizing this important chapter in Canada's history."
