The surgery will be performed at Ottawa General Hospital, Camille Labchuk, the national party's press secretary, told CBC News on Tuesday.
"She only found out this morning [Tuesday] and it has been a busy day, and she hasn't had time to sit down for more information," Labchuk said.
May said she's not looking forward to the surgery, but the prospect of being fully mobile and pain free again is "tremendously exciting."
May said she will be back on her feet in time to lead the Green party into the next general election.
She said that once she is able to walk without the help of a cane, she can say she is "running for office and really mean it."
Labchuk said May is expected to spend several days in hospital following the surgery.
