Comedians Dan Aykroyd and Derek McGrath were among several celebrities who showed up at a Kingston, Ont., courtroom Wednesday to show support for former SCTV and Saturday Night Live comedian Tony Rosato at his criminal harassment trial.

Rosato, 53, who is accused of criminally harassing his wife, doesn't belong in the justice system, said former colleagues such as McGrath, who has been watching his friend's proceedings on and off for the past two years.

"Way back, it was pretty much agreed by everybody, even if they didn't necessarily say it: Tony belongs in a hospital," said McGrath, who has known Rosato since they were both part of the Second City comedy troupe more than 20 years ago.

Rosato has been diagnosed with Capgras syndrome, a rare disorder that has caused him to believe that his wife and child have been replaced by imposters.

Very few spectators have attended the trial since it started on Aug. 7.

Aykroyd and others in the group said it is important for Rosato to be able to look out in the audience and see that his longtime friends are supporting him.

Still, it's not easy for the spectators, said Larry Goldhar, who has been Rosato's agent for 30 years.

"It's so frustrating to sit … in court and see them argue out points that are really not the issue," Goldhar said.

Rosato has been in jail awaiting trial since he was arrested in May 2005.
