Flood victims in Quebec's Gaspé region are asking for more financial aid from the province and Ottawa.

Heavy rains caused a devastating flood last week, leaving two people dead and millions of dollars in damage in the eastern Quebec region. About 200 people had to flee their homes during the disaster, and 50 had to be put up in emergency housing.

Gaspé Mayor François Roussy requested a boost in assistance beyond immediate and essential needs.

Nathalie Normandeau, Quebec's Minister of Municipal Affairs and the territory's representative, told Radio Canada on Sunday the province will create another program to help locals if the existing aid is not enough.

Premier Jean Charest said the province has already allocated $500,000 in assistance to the disaster-stricken area. A local mayor also had discussions with Quebec Conservative MP Jean-Pierre Blackburn about federal financial help.

Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe and Parti Québécois Leader Pauline Marois said the provincial government must make a direct demand to Ottawa.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper cannot close his eyes to the need, Duceppe said. He estimated damages at $10 million and said the federal government should pay for half.
