The City of Montreal is banning heavy trucks on nine bridges and overpasses while engineers conduct extensive inspections of the highway structures.

The structures included in the Montreal list are not part of the 133 already scheduled for inspection after the Johnson Commission warned the province about its aging road infrastructure.

Montreal boroughs, and bridges/overpasses included in ban:

  • Ahuntsic-Cartierville: Gouin Bridge spanning the Bertrand stream
  • Anjou: Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine overpass at Galeries d'Anjou (south side)
  • Côte-des-Neiges: Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce overpass
  • Remembrance/Ville Marie overpass (both directions)
  • Rosemont - La Petite Patrie: Des Carrières ramp
  • Montreal North: Henri-Bourassa Boulevard overpass, above Pie IX Boulevard
  • St. Laurent: Pitfield overpass above the Gouin stream (north side)
  • Verdun: Two overpasses along Île des Soeurs Boulevard, near West Vancouver Park

The Montreal list includes structures under the city's jurisdiction, including the Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce overpass, the Remembrance/Ville Marie overpass and the Pitfield overpass above the Gouin stream, in the demerged city of Ville St. Laurent.

The city moved to ban trucks from the structures to minimize any risk, said Sammy Forcillo, executive committee member responsible for traffic. "Our administration is determined not to take any chances."

Previous inspections of the nine structures did not turn up any problems, Forcillo said.

Three bridges have already been torn down across the province and a fourth required immediate repairs because of safety concerns raised by the Johnson Commission investigating the Concorde overpass collapse.

A section of the concrete overpass spanning Highway 19 in Laval broke off in September 2006, killing five people and injuring six.
