A memorial for former oil executive Earl Joudrie was to be held Monday afternoon at Calgary's Ranchmen's Club, where the city's business elite meets.

Earl Joudrie had been a leader in Alberta's oil patch, holding top positions at Gulf Canada Resources and Dome Canada Ltd., and worked on a number of corporate boards, including Canadian Tire and ATCO. He also helped to restructure Ontario's Algoma Steel.

But Joudrie was best-known for surviving an attack by his estranged wife, Dorothy, in 1995. The Calgary socialite shot him six times in the back.

Joudrie died last Wednesday of cancer at his home near Peterborough, Ont., at age 72.

Dorothy Joudrie was found not criminally responsible for the shooting and spent five months confined to a psychiatric hospital after the trial. She died in 2002.
