After a month of rainy weather, Vancouverites can at least console themselves by boasting about breaking a record.

The British Columbia city endured 29 days of rain over the 31 days in January, the most for the month since weather watchers began keeping records in 1937.

The previous record was 27, and that was reached in both 1953 and 1964, said Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Robillard.

Another record could fall by the end of the day Tuesday, Robillard added: 281.8 mm of total rainfall in January, set in 1992. By the morning, Vancouver was only 14 mm short of the mark.

Earlier in January, the city fell just short of the consecutive-day rain record of 28, set in 1953.

The heavy rainfall has meant lots of extra work for plumbers and restoration specialists dealing with flooded basements across the Lower Mainland.

Wet weather also had triggered an evacuation alert in the North Vancouver neighbourhood that was hit by a deadly landslide a year ago.
