A Toronto-based company is teaming up with the Labrador Métis Nation to build what is being called Canada's largest wind farm, near Churchill Falls.

The three-year project, pegged at $2.5 billion, is slated to begin construction in 2007, pending regulatory approval.

The 300 turbines in the Height of Land Wind Park will eventually produce enough electricity to power 500,000 homes and provide more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, said a release from Ventus Energy.

The company says it doesn't need any provincial loans or grants, and plans to transport the electricity west via Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's power lines.

Company president John Douglas said Ventus shareholders have already raised the money for the project.

Ventus needs to get approval from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to use its transmission grid, and also needs environmental approval.

"We're making what I'll say is an educated and investment decision to invest dollars and create this infrastructure we have," said Douglas.

"We hope and firmly believe the province will recognize those opportunities and see fit to allow a developer like us to prosper."

Public hearings will be held across the province, beginning this year.
