A woman and a man appeared in court on Monday to face charges after a 16-year-old boy from Vancouver was found dead at a SkyTrain station over the weekend.

Matthew Martins was attacked at the Surrey Central SkyTrain bus loop early Saturday morning. The cause of death hasn't been released.

Robert Allan Forstrum is charged with second-degree murder and Katherine Anne Quinn has been charged with attempted robbery.

Teen victim was also attacked last August

This was the second time Martins had been attacked in Surrey in the past year. He received six stitches and suffered badly bruised ribs after thugs jumped him last August.

At the time, his mother pleaded for people to come forward with tips about the crime in order to prevent someone's death in the future.

Now the victim's aunt, Jeannie Martins, is calling for improved security on public transit.

Martins doesn't think the assaults were connected but she wants authorities with TransLink, which runs the SkyTrain service, to do more to protect people.

"Where are the security guards?" she asked. "With the transit system that we have, where are the patrol guards? Why aren't there more, especially on a stat holiday at that time?"

No attendants on duty at time of attack

But TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie says SkyTrain stations are as safe as they can be expected to be.

"The state of security is actually as good, if not better than most places in the community, in that SkyTrain stations are normally spots where there are people around just about any hour of the day or night."

Hardie says there wasn't much TransLink could have done to prevent the assault because the SkyTrain was closed at the time of the attack, and there were no attendants on duty.
