Police have arrested four men in connection with a shooting at a sandwich shop in Toronto almost a year ago that left a mother of three paralyzed.

Bill Blair, the city's police chief-designate, said Thursday at a news conference that the four men arrested in the early morning face more than 100 charges, with more expected.

On the evening of April 21, 2004, Louise Russo was standing in line at a sandwich shop when a gunman opened fire on the building from a minivan in the parking lot. Russo was shot and left paralyzed from the waist down.

"I'm relieved that these suspects were apprehended, but it is still a long journey to go ahead," Russo told reporters after the arrests were announced.

Russo said she is not expected to walk again, adding that she lives in constant pain and still carries bullet fragments in her body.

Blair said Russo was struck by a stray bullet during what is believed to be a dispute between organized crime members. Blair said a crime boss ordered the murder of some of his associates.

Charged are:

• Peter Scarcella, 54, of Vaughan, with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.
• Antonio Borrelli, 29, of Richmond Hill, with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, nine counts of attempted murder and 23 firearms-related charges.
• Mark Peretz, 38, of Vaughan, with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, nine counts of attempted murder and 21 firearms-related charges.
• Paris Christoforou, 27, Mississauga, with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, nine counts of attempted murder and 21 firearms-related charges.
