The National Parole Board has ruled that Karla Homolka must stay in prison for her full sentence, warning that she remains a risk to commit another violent crime.

Homolka's 12-year sentence for her role in the torture, rape and murder of Ontario schoolgirls Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French ends on July 5, 2005.

Her ex-husband, Paul Bernardo, is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Mahaffy and French.

For the last three years, Homolka has refused to appear before the regularly scheduled review board hearings, so its decision to keep her in jail was made on the basis of prison reports alone.

The board noted that Homolka has made some progress toward rehabilitation.

However, it expressed concern about the fact that she is corresponding with an unidentified offender now serving time in another federal institution.

The man has a history of serious conjugal violence.

Homolka apparently met him when they were both being held in different parts of a prison handling unit in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Que.

Homolka, 34, is serving her time in a federal prison in Joliette, Que.
