The controversial Conservative nomination race for Surrey North saw incumbent MP Chuck Cadman lose Sunday to a former news anchor, Jasbir Singh Cheema.

The nomination race saw its share of controversy, as some questioned Cheema's practice of signing up 1,500 new party members in the past six weeks.

Cadman said he believes that nominations shouldn't be about numbers but about choosing the best candidate, and bulk memberships undermine that democratic process.

Instant Conservatives should not play a role in a selection process, Cadman said.

He is considering running as an Independent in the riding.

The Liberals also held their nomination this weekend in Newton, B.C. About 20,000 members, the vast majority of them Indo-Canadian, chose Sukh Dhaliwal as their candidate.
